At St John’s C of E Infants Science is incorporated and taught through termly topics. Through our science teaching we aim to encourage inquiring minds, develop the children’s investigative skills and for them to have opportunities to use all of their senses to explore the world around them. We aim to build on children’s natural curiosity and their sense of awe and wonder and introduce them to the language and vocabulary of science through a range of investigations and practical activities. The children will be encouraged and supported in their enquiries to use scientific skills of observing, identifying, recording and asking and answering questions in order to make sense of those things which happen around them or they come in contact with in their everyday lives.

In Foundation Stage the area of learning that is most closely linked to what will later become ‘science’ falls within Knowledge and Understanding of The World.

In Key stage 1 (Years 1 and 2) science is organised into the following areas:

  • Working scientifically
  • Plants
  • Animals including humans
  • Everyday materials
  • Seasonal changes
  • Living things and their habitats
