Saint John’s School Priest
Madeleine Dahl

Who am I?

My name is Madeleine Dahl. I am originally from Sweden where I have worked my first eight years as a priest. In 2015 I got a calling to move to Chatham and work in two Church of England parishes here (St John’s Ecumenical Parish and St Paul with All Saints Parish). Just after my arrival I was asked if I would like to work with St John’s Infant school and my response was that I would love to. Since I was a teenager I have always wanted to work both as a teacher and a priest and in a way, through being the School Priest at St John’s, that dream has now come through!

What is a School Priest?

The specific task of a School Priest is to help in building and upholding the Christian foundation of the school and to facilitate the spiritual development of the pupils. The overall role of a School Priest is however to support the children and the staff of the school as well as the parents in any ways needed. I, as a School Priest, am available for private conversation, bound by confidentiality. In my capacity as a parish priest I am also happy to take baptisms, weddings or funerals within the families of the St John’s pupils.

What do I do in St John’s school?

I come regularly to the school to lead morning worship and to visit classes to teach about the Christian values of the school or other things related to religion. Four times a year – at Harvest, Christmas, Easter and at the end of the Academic year - I lead a service for the whole school in the parish church. I am also a school governor which means that I share in the responsibility of the governing body of St John’s school. Both in my capacity as a governor and as a School Priest I try to visit different activities run by the school as often as I can.

I hope to meet you there!

Blessings,

Madeleine Dahl,
